Following an explosive performance from Oklahoma State defensive end Obi Ezeigbo in the Cowboys’ Week 2 win over Arkansas, Mike Gundy went viral when discussing his new pass rusher.
When asked about what led him to recruit Ezeigbo, Gundy skipped the coach-speak answer and went straight to the meat and potatoes, saying it came down to a business decision.
“Do you want me to go back into coach talk, or do you want me to tell you the truth?” Gundy asked. “The truth? He’s very inexpensive. The number of players that we go after that were ready to play at this level, we can’t afford.
While going viral is nothing new for Coach Gundy, the 2024 college football season has brought some major media attention to Stillwater. In addition to his comments about Ezeigbo, Gundy’s name has trended for a variety of reasons in the past few months, including comments about Ollie Gordon’s DUI arrest, thoughts on collegiate agents and their role in NIL negotiations, and even comments about the NCAA’s stance on QR codes.
Ezeigbo was a man on a mission in Week 2, stepping in for the injured Collin Oliver, who suffered what appears to be a season-ending injury on Saturday. Ezeigbo posted nine total tackles and two sacks in the 39-31 win, which earned him Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Honors after starting his career with the Gannon Golden Knights.
Gundy finished his thoughts by saying, “He was a good buy and a really quality young man who’d had success and had physical characteristics that we can work with. Raw glass and develop him. That’s why he ended up here, in my opinion.”
