“I’ve probably done that a thousand times in my life.”
That statement from Mike Gundy has Big 12 Media Days buzzing after Day 1. One of the biggest storylines of the day was Ollie Gordon’s DUI arrest from last week. Gordon was in Las Vegas to face the music, but it was his head coach who came out of the day with, by far, the most controversial comments around the arrest.
Gundy said about the arrest, “So I looked it up on my phone. What would be the legal limit, like in Oklahoma, it is .08, and Ollie was .1, and it was, based on body weight, not to get into the legal side of it, and I thought, really, two or three beers, or four, I’m not justifying what Ollie did, I’m telling you what decision I made, and I thought, I’ve probably done that 1,000 times in my life. And it was just fine. I got lucky. People get lucky. Ollie made a decision he wished he could have done better. But when I talked to Ollie I told him you got out light, because you make a lot of money to play football.”

As the video began going viral on social media, Gundy took to his X account to clarify his comments.
It’s impossible to read the transcript of Gundy’s comments and then come to a conclusion he was referring to “bad decisions”. He literally went full-blown analysis on Blood Alcohol Levels and Oklahoma law.
Per News9 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Gordon was pulled over on Interstate 35 south of Oklahoma City after a trooper says Gordon was going 82 in a 65 and swerving through traffic. A probable cause affidavit says the trooper who pulled Gordon over spotted a half-full bottle of vodka and a half-full bottle of tequila.
OHP says Gordon had a blood alcohol content of .11 and .10 when he was tested at jail. The legal limit in the state of Oklahoma is .08.
Meantime, Ollie Gordon spoke about his arrest on Tuesday, saying, “I wanted to be here to be able to face everything instead of, you know, ducking and running. I feel like it would have been disrespectful to leave my teammates and my coach up there to answer all those questions.”
Gundy announced earlier in the day that Ollie Gordon is going to play and won’t miss any games during the 2024 college football season. Gordon was named a unanimous All-American, the Doak Walker Award winner and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year after running for 1,732 yards and 21 TDs in the season.
The Pokes were picked to finish third in the 2024 Preseason Big 12 Media Poll and will open up their season against South Dakota State on August 31.
