Ashley Joens Moves into Second All-Time in Big 12 Women’s Basketball Scoring
There’s now only one player in Big 12 women’s basketball history who has scored more career points than Iowa State’s Ashley Joens. The superstar moved into second place all-time, knocking home her 2,837th career point and counting in an 81-77 double overtime victory at Baylor Saturday night.
She eventually finished with a game-high 27 points. That included a trio of free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the triumph.
The other night in a 73-48 loss to Texas, Joens drained a free throw with 4:59 left in the fourth quarter to claim the Iowa State career scoring record over former stars Angie Welle and Bridget Carleton. With the freebie, she had 2,150 career points. She ended the game with 18 points and 2,156 career points.
Entering that night, Joens was already Iowa State’s career leader in scoring average at 18.6 points per game. She ranked fifth in ISU history in rebounding average with 8.5 rebounds per game. She was fourth in ISU history with 974 career rebounds, 89 away from Seanna Johnson for third. She was second in ISU history with 520 made free throws, 37 away from the school record of 557 belonging to Welle. She was ninth in ISU history with 226 3-point field goals.
Joens scored 408 points in her freshman season, followed by 594 points in her sophomore season and 678 points in her junior season. That season, 2020-21, saw her average 24.2 points per game and win the Cheryl Miller Award as women’s basketball’s best small forward. She is on that award’s Top 10 list and is on every National Player of the Year watch list.
