San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy made headlines last September when he showed up to a media availability dressed as Herky, the official mascot of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Why? Because the former Iowa State quarterback lost a bet with his star tight end, George Kittle, who played for the Hawkeyes. Last year, Iowa went into Ames and beat the Cyclones 20-13, so Purdy had to pay up.
This year, however, Iowa State came out victorious, as Kyle Konrardy made a 54-yard field goal with six seconds left to give the Cyclones a 20-19 victory.
Now, it’s Kittle who has to bear the consequences of the loss. His punishment? Wearing Brock’s old college helmet — two-year-old dry sweat and all.
It turns out Brock was pretty excited to share the news with his teammate about the outcome of the game, as Kittle shared while squeezing into the “small helmet.”
“He texted me the score instantly,” Kittle said. “I said, ‘Thank you, Brock. You ruined my whole weekend.'”
If Iowa had won the game, Purdy would’ve had to endure the same punishment — wear Kittle’s old helmet.
“The exact same thing as me right now,” Kittle said, if the roles were to be reversed.
“Is that his old helmet?” a reported asked.
“Yep. Smells like it,” Kittle said. “Thanks, Brock. But, yeah, I had my Iowa helmet out here, too.”
Iowa State moved into the Top 25 after beating the 21st-ranked Hawkeyes, taking their spot in the poll. The Cyclones are idle this week and will pick up the action when they host Arkansas State next week.
