Big 12 Transfer on Leaving Former Program: ‘Personally, I Wanted to Stay’

Big 12 Basketball Player.

While oftentimes the grass is greener for athletes intending to transfer, on Tuesday, one player in a new program made some interesting comments about his former program.

Baylor’s Jeremy Roach departed Duke to team up with Scott Drew in Waco, and when asked to discuss the process of leaving Duke, the Virginia native made some headline statements.

“It was kind of like a mutual thing,” Roach said in an interview with the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. “I mean, (Jon Scheyer) already kind of knew what was, what I was kind of expecting. Personally, I wanted to stay. I wanted to stay but just like stuff didn’t meet up. It was just my time to go.”

The senior guard is coming off of his best season to date at Duke, where he averaged 14 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in 2023-24. In his four-year career with Duke, Roach posted 11.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, converting 43.9% of his shots from the field and 35.5% from three.

Roach outlined his season expectations for his career in Waco, saying, “Imma let the whole world know right now. I’m not a two, I’m not a three, I’m not a scoring guard. I’m a point guard. Like, it’s – cut all the two-guard. No, no, no, no. That was just what I had to do at Duke. Right now, I’m a point guard, and it’s great to get back to what I do. Just feel more comfortable, getting back to myself. There’s nothing like it.”

Roach is one of many big names heading to Waco in 2024-25 as a part of a loaded offseason transfer portal haul. Paired with players like Miami’s Norchad Omier and Cal’s Jalen Celestine, the Bears should enter the upcoming season with a stellar roster capable of winning the Big 12 and competing for a national title.
