After Miami Dolphin quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another scary concussion injury on Thursday night vs. Buffalo, the team turned to one former member of the Big 12 Conference.
Miami head coach Mike McDaniel mentioned that the team plans to move forward with former Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson as their starter.
McDaniel added that the team plans to sign a veteran quarterback for depth behind Thompson as the former Wildcat suits up as the starter. As for a timeline on Tagovailoa, McDaniel chose not to provide one, saying, “The best thing I can do is not assess what this means from a football standpoint. Timelines give anxiety.”
“It makes me sick,” Thompson said on Tagovailoa’s injury. “I think anyone, for the human eye, it sucks. In my position, you never want to have your opportunity come with something like that. I have a lot of love for Tua. I’ve built a great relationship with him. You care about the person more than the player, and everybody in this organization would say the same thing. Praying for Tua and hoping that everything will come out alright. It was tough to see, though.”
Thompson usually serves behind Tua Tagovailoa, who has stacked up some unfortunate injury history throughout his career. Tagovailoa has suffered multiple concussions, high ankle sprains, finger fractures, rib fractures, and shoulder injuries since being drafted in 2020.
After spending years with both Bill Snyder and Chris Klieman in Manhattan, the Miami Dolphins selected Thompson with the 247th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Thompson has played in eight games during his NFL career, throwing for 614 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Thompson was called on for the Dolphinsâ 2022 playoff game against the Buffalo Bills, with their starter sidelined due to injury. The Kansas State product was narrowly defeated by Josh Allen and the Bills, 34-31, in the Wild Card round.
Now, he will be asked to step up again as the Dolphins push for a bounce-back game with their starter sidelined.
