Two weeks of the 2024 college football season have come and gone, and while there’s still a whole lot of football left to be played, the College Football Playoff picture is a little bit clearer than it was a few weeks ago.
Georgia looks like the clear favorite, and the SEC is almost certain to have the most teams in the 12-team field. Michigan is not the same caliber of team that it was a season ago, but at least they haven’t fallen off the cliff that Florida State has.
As for the Big 12, things appear to be looking up for the league to get multiple teams into the field, but according to CBS Sports, it’s looking really good for the league after Week 2.
In their updated bowl projections on Sunday, CBS Sports has not two, not three, but four Big 12 teams getting into the 12-team playoff.
In this week’s projection, Utah is the No. 4 seed, gets a first-round bye, and would play the winner of (5) Texas and (12) Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Utah passed an early test against Baylor on Saturday with a 23-12 win at home.
The next team in the field is Iowa State, who earns the No. 8 seed and would host No. 9 Oregon in a First Round playoff game in Ames, Iowa. Iowa State had one of the biggest wins of the week with a 20-19 victory over No. 21 Iowa after a 54-yard game-winning field goal in the waning seconds of the contest.
Kansas State is the next team to make the cut, getting the No. 10 seed and would head to Happy Valley to face No. 7 Penn State in the first round. The Wildcats came back to beat a tough Tulane team on the road, 34-27.
Finally, Oklahoma State nabs the No. 11 seed and would head to Tuscaloosa to take on the sixth-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide in the first round. The Pokes were tested by a better-than-expected Arkansas team, but outlasted the Razorbacks in 2OT to move to 2-0 on the season.
Here’s a look at the 12-team field, according to CBS Sports.
- (1) Georgia
- (2) Ohio State
- (3) Miami (FL)
- (4) Utah
- (5) Texas
- (6) Alabama
- (7) Penn State
- (8) Iowa State
