Kenny Dillingham Names Arizona State’s Starting Quarterback

Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham watches his team play against Arizona during the first quarter at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Nov. 25, 2023.

On Monday, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham announced who will be taking snaps under center for the Sun Devils this fall.

According to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Arizona State is expected to name Sam Leavitt as the team’s starting quarterback in 2024.

“Sam Leavitt’s going to be our starting quarterback,” Dillingham said. “Sam’s going to be the starter going into the season. We’re fired up, and we believe we have a lot of quarterbacks on this team that can win football games, and I feel like our quarterback depth is really good to be honest. I’m very confident with all three of our quarterbacks right now.”

Leavitt, a former four-star prospect from Oregon, transferred to Arizona State after starting his career with the Michigan State Spartans. Leavitt played limited snaps during his time with the Spartans, going 15-23 for 139 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Coming out of West Linn High School in the Class of 2023, Leavitt was listed as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 312th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 18th-ranked player at his position and the second-ranked player in the state of Oregon.

Leavitt will now take over the starting job in Tempe after rising sophomore quarterback Jaden Rashada elected to transfer to Georgia. Rashada played limited games for the team due to injuries, but he and senior quarterback Trenton Bourguet helped contribute to the Sun Devils disappointing 3-9 season.

Leavitt will now have to face Big 12 competition in 2024 after the team elected to move from the Pac-12 to the Big 12. Leavitt will get his first taste of action at ASU when the team kicks off their season on Saturday, August 31st, vs. Wyoming.
