In Week 3 of the college football season, Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson showed off his speed on national television.
Following the 31-7 win over Arizona, Pro Football Focus’ Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman raved about Johnson’s speed, calling him the fastest quarterback in the nation.
“Avery Johnson, are there any quarterbacks in the nation faster than him? I don’t know that there’s a quarterback in the country right now that makes breaking contain look so easy,” Wasserman said. “He could make the wrong read on a read option and still outrun them. It doesn’t matter.”
The rising sophomore put on the best performance of his young career in Friday’s win, posting 266 yards of total offense and two scores. Johnson threw for 156 yards and two scores while showing his electric speed in the ground game. The Kansas native posted 110 yards on 17 rushes, helping to contribute to the Wildcats’ 235 rushing yards on the ground.
Johnson’s ability helped the Wildcats earn a 3-0 record in the non-conference schedule, with wins over UT Martin, Tulane, and No. 20 Arizona. Kansas State won the matchups by a margin of 106 to 40.
Kansas State now heads into conference play on the road in Provo for some late-night Big 12 after-dark action. The Wildcats square off against the undefeated BYU Cougars on Saturday, September 21st, at 9:30 p.m. CT.
