While regionality isn’t worth much in the modern era of college athletics, one conference of the past is having an incredible start to the 2024 college football season.
Six members of the original Big Eight Conference are listed in the Week 3 AP Top 25 Poll, with the two outside being Kansas, previously ranked No. 19, and Colorado.
The six members currently listed in the Top 25 are headlined by No. 6 Missouri, followed by No. 13 Oklahoma State, No. 14 Kansas State, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 21 Iowa State, and No. 23 Nebraska. Each team in the group currently has a 2-0 record, while Kansas and Colorado have a 1-1 record.
Unfortunately, college athletics have changed, with conference realignment splitting the league into three different conferences. Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado, and Oklahoma State all currently belong to the Big 12, Oklahoma and Missouri are members of the SEC, and Nebraska currently belongs to the Big Ten.
While some have criticized the idea of a hypothetical super conference taking over with teams across the nation joining its ranks, in all likelihood, that appears to be the only way the former Big Eight members would find themselves back in a conference together.
