Baylor’s Aijha Blackwell on Return: ‘Soon, Real Soon’

NCAA Basketball: Oklahoma State at Texas Tech

Baylor guard Aijha Blackwell struck an optimistic tone about her return to the Baylor women’s basketball team later this season.

Blackwell’s social media post shed some light on the knee injury that she suffered against SMU last month, one that has kept her off the court and one that Baylor would provide little context about at the family’s request.

Blackwell broke that silence, posting on Twitter “Soon, real soon.”

In our game against SMU on Nov. 17, I had to leave the game due to a right knee injury. Although it has been a challenging few weeks, God has blessed me with the opportunity to return soon to the game that I love and, for that, I am truly grateful.

Blackwell went on to thank her family, along with her teammates and coaching staff. She provided a specific thank-you to the team’s medical staff.

Blackwell did not provide a specific time frame for her return to the floor.

She played in just three games before the injury and averaged 14 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Blackwell transferred from Missouri, where last season she averaged 15.4 points and 13 rebounds, as she averaged a double-double for the second straight season.

Her transfer was supposed to soften the blow of losing Big 12 Player of the Year NaLyssa Smith to the WNBA. The Bears have also been without another key transfer, former Kentucky guard/forward Dre’una Edwards, who has been out for eligibility reasons.

Still, the Bears are 7-2 as they prepare to face Tennessee State on Thursday and No. 20 Arizona on Sunday, the latter of which is at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. After that, the Bears host Long Beach State on Dec. 21 before taking a holiday break before hosting TCU to open Big 12 action on Dec. 31.
