Following the Wyoming Cowboys 34-14 loss to the BYU Cougars on Saturday night, Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel raved about the sheer size of his opponents.
“I mean, there’s some ass up there,” Sawvel said about BYU. “It’s not a bad-looking club.”
“We have to take the little steps, but we also have, you know, I’ll be honest too,” Sawvel said. “And you’re standing on the sideline, and you look out there and see that defense. I mean, there’s some ass up there, you know, when you’re looking at that front, and you’re looking at the way that the secondary looks and the linebackers look, it’s not a bad-looking club.”
The “ass” on BYU’s defense did a tremendous job bottling up Wyoming’s offense on Saturday, surrendering just 217 yards of total offense. The unit allowed the Cowboys just 3.3 yards per play on average and forced eight punts and one turnover.
“You know, I was stood out there on that sideline at Arizona State, and there’s ass at all levels,” Sawvel continued. “I mean, they look good. It’s not a bad team. So we have to, we have to get better. But I’m also not going to just, you know, trash our whole organization, because we’ve lost to a couple people that you know we needed to play perfect to beat, and then we blew execution in one other game.”
On offense, BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff continued his hot start to the 2024 season, throwing for 291 yards and three touchdowns. He also recorded six carries for 62 yards as a key player in the Cougars’ rushing attack.
Now advancing to conference play with a 3-0 record, Kelani Sitake and the Cougars will take the field next against a fellow undefeated team at home, No. 14 Kansas State. The game kicks off on Saturday, September 21st, at 9:30 p.m. CT.
