Lance Leipold Cites ‘Load Management’ Approach to Evaluating Jalon Daniels’ Health

NCAA Football: Illinois at Kansas

With Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels being a major offseason talking point due to his difficult stretch of injuries, on Thursday, head coach Lance Leipold discussed what the process looks like to manage their star quarterback.

Leipold cited the NBA’s load management concept, which is a key factor in keeping stars healthy and on the court during a grueling season.

When asked about how much Daniels can benefit from live reps in practice considering the amount games missed throughout his career, Leipold responded, “Well, that’s a balancing act right now for us. We gotta get back to it and get all the bodies around him and back used to it. It needs to be good load management; I think they use that word in the NBA or something. I think we night borrow that for this year.”

Daniels, a California native, missed a chunk of games over the past two seasons due to a lingering back issue. When on the field for the Jayhawks, Daniels has been an electric playmaker for Lance Leipold’s squad. Over the better part of four years, Daniels has thrown for 4,297 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 31-12.

Barring any unforeseen setbacks, Daniels and the Jayhawks will kick off their season against Lindenwood on Thursday, August 29th.
