Arizona State vs. Texas State Spread is Moving in a Surprising Direction

Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham watches his team play against Arizona during the first quarter at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Nov. 25, 2023.

Arizona State vs. Texas State kicks off on Thursday night and the line movement is not in favor of the Big 12 team in this match up against a Group of 5 opponent.

Arizona State may be off to an unexpected 2-0 start, but the big-money bettors aren’t buying the Sun Devils, at least not this week.

Spread Movement

According to WagerTalk, Arizona State opened up as as 3-point favorite at Texas State. But the line quickly moved to Arizona State -1.5.

Now this comes despite the majority of the betting tickets (58%) being on Arizona State. So this meanings that the larger bets are being placed on Texas State to cover the spread, despite more overall tickets coming in on the Sun Devils.

There’s certainly a case to be made that this could be a trap game for Arizona State after starting off 2-0, beating an SEC opponent at home last week and getting set for Big 12 Conference play next weekend. But Texas State is not a team to be overlooked.

The Bobcats were picked to win the South Division in the Sun Belt and have looked impressive early in the season at 2-0, with a 34-27 win over Lamar and then a 49-10 win over UTSA. Quarterback Jordan McCloud ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead Texas State to a 49-10 win over UTSA on Saturday.

For Texas State, it’s their only game vs. a Power 4 team this season, and it’s on their home turf. Expect a tough match up on Thursday night. Kick off is set for 6:30 PM CST in San Marcos, Texas.
