West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball: 2019-20 Schedule Analysis
Leading up to Big 12 media days in Kansas City Heartland College Sports will analyze each of the Big 12 men’s basketball schedules. Today it’s the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Season opener: The Mountaineers open the season with Akron on Nov. 8.
Tournaments: Bob Huggins takes his young team to Mexico for a pair of games in the Cancun Challenge. The Mountaineers face Northern Iowa and, depending on that result, either South Carolina or Wichita State. The Mountaineers also play Ohio State in the Cleveland Classic after Christmas.
The Big 12/Big East Game: Now this is what Bob Huggins likes — a trip to New York City. West Virginia faces St. John’s at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 7.
The Big 12/SEC Game: West Virginia host Missouri on Jan. 25.
The Big Non-Con: It’s Pitt. It’s in Pittsburgh. It’s the renewal of the Backyard Brawl, basketball style, on Nov. 15.
Mid-Major Danger: Rhode Island is coming off an 18-15 season in which it reached the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Big 12 Opener: Huggins can’t be happy about this — a road trip to Kansas on Jan. 4.
The ‘Big’ Big 12 stretch: A young team needs a good start to league play so that means the first six games are critical. After the road trip to KU, the Mountaineers continue to Oklahoma State. After that its back-to-back home games with Texas Tech and TCU, followed by a road trip to Kansas State and a home game with Texas before the Big 12-SEC Challenge. That will give us a real indicator of where the Mountaineer are by mid-January.
