Big 12 Baseball Sunday Six-Pack: Oklahoma State Takes Down TCU While Kansas State Sweeps Houston
Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six-pack.
Best Game
Baylor at Texas
With just four games on Sunday, there really wasn’t a whole lot to choose from but I decided to talk about Texas here for a bit. The Longhorns took down Baylor 11-1 on Sunday to take the series.
Texas put up five runs in the first inning as Kimble Schuesler and Max Belyeu went deep.
Belyeu ended up homering two more times in this game, as Texas had control all day long. At no point was the game ever really in doubt for Texas, and they desperately needed a series win to get back on the right track. While I still have my doubts about this team, it was a much-needed step in the right direction.
Best Win
Oklahoma State over #18 TCU
Anytime you can get a top-25 win, it’s a big deal. After dropping game one on Friday night, Oklahoma State was able to get back-to-back wins this weekend to take the series. TCU got on the board early to take a 2-0 lead, but that didn’t faze the Cowboys at all. Lane Forsythe got Oklahoma State going before they put up three runs in the third inning, thanks to key hits from Nolan Schubart, Aidan Meola, and Tyler Wulfert.
Nolan Schubart once again came up clutch with a big hit in the seventh and then Kollin Ritchie brought in another run as Oklahoma State took a 6-2 lead in the seventh inning. While TCU would score a run late, the Cowboys were able to take game three and the series with a 6-3 win. With the loss, TCU now falls to 2-7 in Big 12 play and will need to play catch up while Oklahoma State moves to 3-3. This was a big series for both teams for obvious reasons and it will be interesting to see how both teams respond after this weekend.
Worst Loss
Houston
After falling to BYU last weekend, Houston hosted Kansas State for a three-game series. The Cougars dropped the first two games and ended up losing 9-3 on Sunday. Houston dropped the ball this weekend a blew a big opportunity to stay near the top of the Big 12 standings. With the loss, the Cougars now fall to 4-5 in conference play and will need to turn things around quickly to stay in the title picture. This team is too talented to be dropping series and getting swept. Luckily for them, there is still plenty of baseball to be played.
Sunday MVP
Texas RF Max Belyeu
Max had a big day for the Longhorns as he drilled three home runs against Baylor. He hit his first one in the first inning of the game before going yard in the fourth and eighth inning, He was without a doubt the MVP for Sunday.
Pitcher of the Day
Texas RHP Max Grubbs
Ma pitched seven full innings against Baylor and allowed just one run during his time on the mound.
Best Home Run
Texas RF Max Belyeu
Max hit three home runs on Sunday so I decided to pick my favorite one. A grand slam.
