Joey McGuire on Season Challenges: ‘We’ve Got to Play Well Outside of Our Comfort Zone’
Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are no strangers to adversity this season. McGuire was recently asked about how his approach has to change heading into Week 6 and gave an interesting answer.
McGuire told 247Sports’ Jarret Johnson that his team has to find ways to win away from home saying, “We’ve got to play well outside of our comfort zone.”
McGuire gave a detailed answer when discussing another tough road matchup as the Red Raiders travel to Waco on Saturday to take on Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears.
“I thought we were really locked in on the sideline in West Virginia,” McGuire said. “But you know, I mean, we stay in the routine that we’re in almost with home games. The difference would be if it was a seven o’clock kick here we would come over and do a walkthrough in the indoor, but you know, we had to do all our walkthroughs at the hotel this weekend being at home.”
McGuire continued by mentioning the hostile environment that his squad will be walking into at McLane Stadium, with an especially motivated fanbase watching after Baylor’s incredible 36-35 upset win against UCF.
“I’ve got to challenge our guys to… we’ve got to play well outside of our comfort zone,” McGuire said. “Obviously, playing Jones AT&T and playing in front of our fans is our comfort zone. And so now we’ve got to pull closer together in a hostile environment and play better and get a road win.”
The Texas Tech Red Raiders take on the Baylor Bears on Saturday, October 7th, at 7:00 PM CT in Waco. Joey McGuire’s squad looks to advance to 3-3 against Baylor in hopes of avoiding a 1-2 start to Big 12 play.
