Former legendary Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops knows a thing or two about college football. After spending 18 years at the helm in Norman, there wasn’t much that Stoops didn’t see in his time with the Sooners.
However, to say that things have changed since he left the sidelines would be an understatement, as college football is nearly unrecognizable from when he left in 2016.
Still, as someone who keeps up with everything that goes on in the sport, there’s not a lot that gets by Stoops when it affects the Sooners. After all, there’s probably not a person in the world who understands Oklahoma football the way that Bob Stoops does.
There aren’t many things that college football fans can agree on, but one thing that the vast majority of folks do find middle ground on is how poorly the NCAA has managed the sport.
Earlier this week, during an interview with a Cleveland radio station (92.3 The Fan), Stoops shared his disdain for how things have been run into the ground.
“It’s not very good. I don’t think it’s very good for anybody,” Stoops said last week. “Is it sustainable? In my eyes, it’s not.”
But Stoops has a fix for the issues that college football is dealing with as it pertains the things like the transfer portal and NIL. A College Football Commissioner.
“It’s a pro model right now with college football,” Stoops said.”It’s a pro model. So, the NCAA isn’t governing it. We need to have a commissioner. We have to have salary caps on what you can spend. You have to have contracts, on and on. I don’t see how you cannot if it’s going to continue this way.”
The NCAA has certainly created the mess that it currently finds itself in, and without some sort of outside help, there’s a good chance they won’t ever get it figured out. The Kadyn Proctor situation has certainly brought more light to the issues, but it might take even more chaos to see real changes made.
Until changes are made, as Stoops suggests, college football will continue to run roughshod over what has been deemed acceptable for the entire lifespan of the sport.
