Oklahoma’s Alynah Torres (Player) and Texas’ Teagan Kavan (Pitcher) have earned the honors of Big 12 Player and Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for Week 7 (March 18-24).
Both Torres and Kavan played pivotal roles in their teams’ 4-0 records last week, helping the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country continue their dominant starts to the 2024 season.
Here’s a look at the announcements for each player, as well as what the Big 12 Conference had to say about them in a press release from the league.
Torres led the Big 12 in home runs (4), RBIs (10), and total bases (17) during the week while hitting .625 with a league-leading 2.125 slugging percentage. The senior helped the Sooners go undefeated during the week, including a sweep over then-No. 22/19 Baylor to keep OU atop the Conference standings with a mark of 9-0. This is the third consecutive season Oklahoma has won Player of the Week in three straight weeks and is the first weekly award for Torres.
Kavan started her week with a seven-inning complete-game shutout at UCF. The freshman allowed just five hits and one walk while tossing four strikeouts in the 5-0 Longhorn victory. Entering a 3-1 game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth on Sunday, Kavan retired all seven batters to secure her second save of the season. The native of West Des Moines, Iowa, was the only Big 12 pitcher during the week with a win and a save, while her .152 opponent batting average was the lowest by any league pitcher who faced 33 or more batters. This is Kavanβs second Pitcher of the Week honor as she becomes the first Longhorn freshman to win the award twice since Blaire Luna in 2010.
