Texas Tech quotable: Kingsbury on bevy of true freshmen; Davis Webb on being picked 6th in Big 12

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury’s youth has made him one of the most talked about coaches in the country.

The youth on the 35-year-old’s football team could have fans gabbing about the Red Raiders, too — for better or for worse.

Texas Tech has five true freshmen on its two-deep depth chart, and only seven seniors are projected starters.

“I wouldn’t say we have any (freshmen who will redshirt) for sure,” Kingsbury said at Monday’s weekly media availability. “I think a lot of these guys are up and ready to go.”

Freshman Tevin Madison won the starting cornerback job over fellow freshman Jah’Shawn Johnson, who starred at Ennis, but Kingsbury expects the two to rotate in.

Former Whitehouse quarterback Patrick Mahomes will play in mop-up duty, Kingsbury said. Mahomes and sophomore starter Davis Webb are the only scholarship quarterbacks on roster.

“Since he’s not red‑shirting, we’re going to play him as much as we can,” Kingsbury said. “When we can find times that he can go in the game throughout the year, we’re going to try to maximize that, because in an ideal world, like I said, you would like to red‑shirt him, but he’s not afforded that luxury.  So we’ll get him out there, and as much as we can play Pat, we’re going to play him.”

Here are some highlights from Monday’s availability:

COACH KLIFF KINGSBURY

On running the ball Week 1:

“I don’t have a number or percentage, but just be more confident in our run game leaving this game.  You’d like to be able to hand it off more when you have the box to do so.  So hopefully we can get that rolling a little bit.”
