Texas Tech football continues to do well in the fundraising department, this time getting a second $5 million donation from a notable alum.
As reported by Don Williams, 1986 graduate Mike Wallace has pledged his second $5 million gift to the Jones AT&T Stadium and Womble Football Center projects.
Texas Tech has had the funding to stay ahead of the NIL curve, including one-year, $25,000 NIL deals for football players back in 2022. The Matador Club was one of the first major collectives in college football, as the college sports landscape continues to transition into a minor league system, with players getting paid.
Most recently, Texas Tech shocked the college softball world with $1 million deal for NiJaree Canady. The reigning USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, Canady led the nation in ERA (0.73) and strikeouts (337) as a sophomore last season and boasts an incredible 41-10 record as a starter. In two seasons, Canady tossed 365.2 IP and 34 complete games, totaling an absurd 555 strikeouts to just 65 walks, with 35 earned runs and just 180 hits allowed.
However, it was expected the former Stanford Cardinal might get $100,000 to $150,000. But Texas Tech blew that expectation out of the water.
So as Joey McGuire enters Year 3 in Lubbock, with expectations increasing for the Red Raiders, there’s clearly been substantial monetary support for the program, and another cool $5 million donation is the latest example of that.
