Watch: Kansas Running Back Decleats Fan on Sideline

Football is a violent sport. I’ve heard several head coaches argue that it’s a “collision” sport rather than a contact sport, and on Thursday night, a young lady on the sideline of the Kansas vs. Lindenwood football game learned that the hard way.

In the second quarter, Jayhawks’ running Daniel Hishaw – known for his physicality – took a carry on 3rd-and-1 at the Lindenwood 12-yard line and was fighting for the goal line before being shoved out of bounds just before crossing the plane. Hishaw’s momentum carried him – all 220 pounds of him – out of bounds and into an unlucky woman watching from near the goal line.

There aren’t many times when the word “decleating” is necessary, but this situation certainly calls for it – and honestly, she took the hit like a champ!

Here’s what it looked like from her point of view.

Ouch.

As someone who spends a portion of their career as a sideline videographer, I can say from experience that if you’re going to be that close to the game, you’d better keep your head on a swivel.

It was good to see her get up under her own power and see Hishaw make sure she was okay before he returned to the field of play. During the ensuing television break between Kansas’ score and kickoff, head coach Lance Leipold also went over to check on her.

Kansas went on to win the game 48-3, with Hishaw finishing with nine carries for 66 yards and one score.

After the game, Leipold said she was fine but also joked that he checked with compliance to see if she had any eligibility after the hit.

Things will get much more interesting next week when KU travels to Illinois for a Big Ten vs. Big 12 showdown.
