Big 12 Tiebreaker Information Confirmed Ahead of Saturday’s Week 13 Games
After Texas clinched a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday with a 57-7 win over Texas Tech, the chaos that many thought could unfold in the league is not going to happen.
So after the UT win, the league announced how the No. 2 seed will be determined during Saturday’s slate of Big 12 football games. Here are the two options, including confirmation that Kansas State has been eliminated from the Big 12 Championship Game. So the Wildcats will not be able to defend their title.
- If Oklahoma State defeats BYU, the Cowboys clinch a berth to the Championship as the #2 seed. This is by virtue of their head-to-head wins versus both Oklahoma and Kansas State.
- If Oklahoma State loses on Saturday, Oklahoma clinches the #2 seed. This is by virtue of Oklahoma’s win over Texas, giving Oklahoma the tiebreaker over Kansas State due to win percentage over highest placed common opponent (Texas).
- Kansas State has been eliminated by virtue of the Wildcats loss to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma having the tiebreaker advantage over Kansas State. This outcome is regardless of tomorrow’s results.
So everything is riding on Oklahoma State vs. BYU. The Sooners have already done their business, beating TCU on Friday afternoon in Norman.
Oklahoma State and BYU have played twice in their history, and both matchups came in a three-year span in bowl matchups. In 1974, the Cowboys and Cougars met in the Fiesta Bowl, a 16-6 win for Oklahoma State in Tempe, Arizona. The second meeting, in 1976, came in the Tangerine Bowl, a 49-21 win for OSU in Orlando, Florida.
The Cowboys and Cougars will kick off at 2:30 CST on ABC.
