Burnham taking different approach with ISU defense

Wally Burnham saw no other choice.

After a troubling first game in which Iowa State gave up 506 total yards, he needed to make a change. He swapped out linebackers and brought more pressure. The moves didn’t result in a win but brought some stability.

So expect he’ll to continue to think outside the box in order to get more from the defense against Iowa on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).

“We’ve got to create ways,” the Cyclone defensive coordinator said. “We have to create that confusion and not let them know what we are going to be (doing) every time.”

ISU prefers to play a conservative, “bend-but-don’t-break” defense. The North Dakota State game showed it didn’t totally mesh with Burnham’s young defense.
