If not for Cory Morrissey, ISU might be 0-3

I sat down Sunday morning to opine about Iowa State’s offense. About Sam Richardson having his best game, and even for the first time in his life — smiling.

I planned to write about how Allen Lazard continued to show us why he’s every bit as good as his headlines. About how we knew the Cyclones would easily drive half the field to set up Cole Netten’s game-winning field goal.

And then reality set in.

As good as the offense played in a sold-out Kinnick Stadium, Cy doesn’t beat Hawk for the third time in the past four years without solid play from the defense. Without the most consistent play from that unit this season, maybe the best against a big-time opponent in a long time by those guys who came into the season with so many question marks, Iowa State doesn’t win 20-17. The Cyclones would be 0-3 as I write this.
