San Diego State Player Says Aztecs Have Expected Pac-12 Move for a Year

The last two athletic years have been some of the most memorable in the Aztecs’ history, dating back to when the school was founded in 1897.

In 2021, SDSU’s football program finished the year at 12-2, its most-ever wins in a single season and was ranked No. 25 in the Final AP Poll, just the second time to finish the season ranked since 1986. The Aztecs also won the Mountain West in men’s basketball in 2021, finishing with a 23-5 record.

In 2022, the men’s basketball team went 32-7 and finished as the national runner-up in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, its highest-ever finish in D-I.

However, it appears that there was a chance that the last year or so could’ve been even bigger for the Aztecs. SDSU has been at the center of conference realignment talks for months now, but internally, the Aztecs might have been expecting to make a move for much longer than that.

According to San Diego State tight end Mark Redman, the football team was told a year ago that they should expect an announcement to the Pac-12 and they’d thought that an announcement would come months ago.

The report comes from Sam Farnsworth, of KSL5 TV in Salt Lake City (UT), who was at Mountain West Media Days yesterday to catch the news from Redman himself.

So, has the Pac-12’s inability to land a media rights deal left San Diego State in a state of uncertainty for months now? It appears that way, and who knows when, or if, they’ll get it worked out.

Either way, SDSU appears to be sticking with the Mountain West, for now at least, with the conference announcing that it may remain a member after its de facto withdrawal went horribly wrong.
