Alamo Bowl: Texas Selected to Face Washington
The Texas Longhorns are headed to the Alamo Bowl later this month to take on the Washington Huskies, according to the Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.
The game is set for Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. central.
Texas is coming off an 8-4 season in which it finished third in the Big 12 behind TCU and Kansas State, which played an overtime thriller in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday. The last time Texas won eight games in a season was in 2019 under Tom Herman. Texas will be going for its first nine-win season since 2012. In between, Texas won 10 games in 2018, along with the Peach Bowl.
Texas boasts an offense that has explosive potential and is built around the talents of running back Bijan Robinson, who could be playing his final college game. Robinson is a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, given to college football’s best running back. He rushed for 1,580 yards and 18 touchdown this season.
Texas had an impressive season, even though it fell short of reaching the Big 12 title game. Texas won just five games in head coach Steve Sarkisian’s debut in 2021, so Texas made a three-game improvement.
Texas is losing some players to the transfer portal already. Players that have declared entering the official opening of the portal on Monday including quarterback Hudson Card, offensive lineman Andrej Karic, wide receiver Troy Omeire, defensive back Jamier Johnson and defensive back JD Coffey.
Texas is back in a bowl game after a one-season absence. Texas will play in its 58th bowl game and has a record of 31-24-2 in bowl games. This will be the sixth time the Longhorns have played in the Alamo Bowl, and the third time in four seasons.
Washington (10-2) only lost to UCLA and Arizona State in Pac-12 play this season. The Huskies are led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who threw for 4,354 yards and 29 touchdowns this season.
Texas and Washington have never played each other in a bowl game.
