2025 Five-Star Prospect Narrows Cutdown List, Two Big 12 Teams Remain

Big 12 Basketball Player.

2025 five-star combo guard Darryn Peterson’s recruitment just got a whole lot more intense, with his cutdown list dropping from seven to four final teams.

The four remaining teams in Peterson’s recruitment include Kansas, Kansas State, Ohio State, and USC.

As a sophomore, Peterson averaged 31 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.8 steals, and 1.3 assists and was a finalist for the Ohio Mr. Basketball Award. Peterson went on to transfer schools from Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy to West Virginia’s Huntington Prep and now resides at California’s Prolific Prep for the remainder of his high school career.

Coming out of Prolific Prep in the Class of 2025, Peterson is listed as a five-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s third-ranked prospect. He also checks in as the top-ranked player at his position and the top-ranked player in the state of California.

“Darryn Peterson possesses a combination of size, length, strength, and skill, allowing him to smoothly score and make plays for himself and others,” 247Sports’ Adam Finkelstein said. “He’s a versatile threat who can operate from multiple spots on the floor and has a way of making it look effortless in the process. He can play both on and off the ball, has a very good pull-up game, is a consistent shooting threat off the catch from behind the three-point line, and is willing to bring smaller guards into the low post. Peterson sees the floor well and can facilitate for those around him. He also has an advanced understanding of how to get himself to the free-throw line.”

Before making the trip to Manhattan, Kansas, on September 27th for a K-State visit, Peterson will visit Ohio State on August 30th. He has already completed officials to Kansas, USC, and Kentucky.
