Arizona State Sun Devils

Fact or Fiction Friday: The Road to Arlington is Narrow, No Team Has a 10-Win Regular Season

Avery Johnson, Tetairoa McMillan, and Cam Rising

Welcome to Fact or Fiction Friday. Each Friday, I allow our Facebook and message board fans to ask the most intriguing questions in the Big 12 Conference, and I will tell you whether they come true or if they are set to fail.

Now, let’s crack open this week’s list and see what we have in store.

A Team Not Named, Utah, Kansas State, Or Oklahoma State Will Make It To Arlington

Fiction: When I did my preseason Big 12 poll back in July, my top three teams were Utah, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State. Of course, there is always a surprise or two every single year, but I feel very comfortable about those top three teams. It’s possible someone from the outside makes it, but I would bet that it will end up being a combination of two of those three teams.

Arizona State Will Finish With a Better Record Than Colorado

Fiction: It wouldn’t shock me if that happened, but I am taking Colorado here. The big reason why? Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. Arizona State doesn’t have two guys like that offensively.  The Sun Devils are starting Sam Leavitt, and no disrespect to him, but he is no Sanders. Both teams have question marks defensively, but I feel better about Colorado’s offense than Arizona State which is why I would take the Buffaloes to finish with a better record in 2024.

More Than Four Big 12 Teams Will Have a Shot At Getting To Arlington

Fact: I recently had a question like this in my mailbag when I was asked about title contenders. To me, up to ten teams have a legitimate chance to get to Arlington. Those teams are Utah, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Iowa State, Arizona, UCF, West Virginia, Texas Tech, and TCU. I wouldn’t be surprised if any of those ten teams ended up in Jerry World come December. Now, do some teams have a better chance at getting there? Sure, but this is the Big 12 baby. It’s America’s conference, and it’s the deepest conference in all of college football.

Every Team Will Have More Than Two Losses In The Big 12

Fiction: I don’t mean to be rude, but there is a zero percent chance that we will have a Big 12 championship game between two teams with three or more losses. In the worst-case scenario, there would be two 10-2 teams in Arlington, but I don’t even see that happening. While I believe that this is the toughest conference from top to bottom, I have a tough time seeing teams like Utah, Kansas State, or Oklahoma State struggle so severely that they lose three games during the regular season. Plus, if this comes true, then the national media will have a field day with this conference and drag it through the mud.

A Big 12 School Will Host College GameDay

Fact: At least one or two Big 12 schools will get a chance to host College GameDay. Just looking at the schedule, there are several opportunities for the conference. We could see them go to Stillwater on September 21st when Oklahoma State hosts Utah or maybe the following week when Oklahoma State goes to Manhattan to take on Kansas State. Also, look out for the Sunflower Showdown (Kansas at Kansas State) or Utah at Colorado. With the conference race being so competitive, the Big 12 will have some chances to host GameDay.
