Sunday Six-Pack: TCU and Oklahoma State Shine While Tech Loses a Thriller in Extras

big 12 baseball shriners college classic

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#24 Texas Tech vs #15 Texas A&M

We were lucky enough to get two Big 12 games that went into extra innings. Texas made a late game push against Cal State Fullerton but ultimately fell short out west. Unfortunately, Texas Tech lost in extras as well. However, I had to make the Texas Tech/Texas A&M game the best because it was. The Red Raiders had a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning and due to walks, let A&M tie the game up at two. From there, it was a stalemate as they went all the way to sixteen innings before Texas A&M took the lead thanks to a hit by Jack Moss. Tech got one more at-bat but couldn’t get the job done as they fell 4-2 in an absolute thriller.

Best Win

Oklahoma State over Austin Peay

I was hoping Texas Tech would get the victory, but they weren’t able to close it out. TCU had a strong case for the best win but it was against Rice. So, I decided to go with Oklahoma State here. The Cowboys were down 4-0 in the first inning and then their bats caught fire. Oklahoma State hit six home runs in this game and two of them came from Nolan McLean. It almost felt like batting practice out there because it seemed like every ball they hit was going out of the ballpark. With the 12-4 win, the Cowboys completed the sweep over Austin Peay.

Worst Loss

Kansas vs Belmont

The Jayhawks just didn’t have it on Sunday. They were doing great until the fourth inning when they gave up seven runs. Those seven runs ended up being all the runs that the Bruins would score in the game. With the loss, Kansas ended up dropping the series as well.

Sunday MVP

Kansas State INF Orlando Salinas Jr.

Orlando had a busy day on Sunday as he led the Wildcats to a big victory over Army. He got his day started with a two-run double before driving in another run in the seventh inning. But he wasn’t done just yet as he went yard in the eighth with a big two-run blast to cap of his bid day.

Pitcher of the Day

TCU RHP Cam Brown

This isn’t the first time Cam has won my pitcher of the day award. He delivered another dominant performance on Sunday afternoon against Rice. Brown pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just three hits against the Owls. He also was able to strike out eight batters as well during his time on the mound. Cam was without a doubt, the pitcher of the day in the Big 12 and may earn Big 12 player of the week honors as well.

Best Home Run

Texas INF Jack O’Dowd

I know Texas didn’t win the game but Jack’s home run gave Texas a chance to take the game and the series. Texas went into the ninth inning down by two runs and Jack O’Dowd hit a clutch home run with a man on to tie the game. That homer ended up sending the game to extra innings where they Longhorns fell short.
