Brock Purdy Undergoes Successful UCL Surgery
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy underwent successful surgery on his UCL Friday. Multiple sources reported the news, and the team eventually confirmed it later on.
And there’s now a timeline for when he’ll begin throwing once again. That’s expected to be in roughly three months, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
By all accounts, the surgery could not have gone better. And that has to be a huge relief for the Niners organization.
“It sounded like it went really well, all positive for the 49ers and Brock Purdy,” said NFL Network National Insider Ian Rapoport. “He did have his long winded surgery. Dr. [Keith] Meister performed the procedure, the Texas Rangers team doctor, inserting an internal brace into the UCL of Brock Purdy. Now, the doctor went into the surgery today with options. The options were, I think, very simple and very clear. One was Tommy John surgery, which would mean out for the season, full elbow reconstruction. That would be bad. Long term it would be fine, but immediately that would be bad.
“That is not the option that the doctor chose. Instead, he went with what was the result from a really good looking internal elbow, from my understanding. The fact that the UCL was healthy enough to do the internal brace means Brock Purdy should throw in about three months. And that is the timetable we have.
“Now, presumably that would give him enough time to be ready for the season. But either way, there was a worst case scenario, and then there was the other. This was the other, which is good.”
After stepping up in a major way as a rookie, Purdy saw his season come to an abrupt end when he suffered the injury in the NFC Championship Game against Philadelphia. He actually came back in to finish the game when Josh Johnson also went down, but he was unable to throw in that return. Purdy finished the season throwing for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns to only four interceptions, with a 65.6 QBR.
