West Virginia Flips Four-Star Recruit Jonathan Powell From Xavier

NCAA Basketball: Morehead State at West Virginia

The West Virginia Mountaineers picked up a key piece for their Class of 2024 in Ohio guard Jonathan Powell, according to On3 Sports.

Powell was originally committed to Xavier before flipping his commitment on Monday to the Mountaineers. The 6’5” shooting guard from Dayton is a four-star prospect, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Powell has been committed to Xavier since last spring and signed with the Musketeers last November. Late last week, he requested to be released from his National Letter of Intent.

In 29 games last season, Powell averaged 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 45% from the field, 38% from three-point range, and 67% from the free throw line. Powell was named the Division I Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year.

The On3 scouting report on Powell reads, “Jonathan Powell is a lengthy and rangy off-guard. He is a natural ability to score from each level. He has a good handle in the half-court, where he gets to his spots. The jump shot has good balance and a consistent release. He needs to work on shot prep off the ball and tighten his angles and footwork. There is positional size, confidence, and nice athleticism. His father was a double-digit scorer at Eastern Michigan.”
