Houston Lands Auburn Transfer CB JD Rhym

NCAA Football: Houston at Texas Tech

After two seasons with the Auburn Tigers, cornerback JD Rhym transferred to the University of Houston.

Rhym was ranked No. 152 in the Class of 2022 before playing two seasons at Auburn, where he totaled 20 tackles and one interception.

According to 247Sports, Rhym was a four-star recruit out of high school and the No. 16 ranked player in Georgia.

Zach Etheridge, the current defensive backs coach for the Houston Cougars, coached Rhym when he held the same position at Auburn. Therefore, Rhym is familiar with the defensive schemes Etheridge will run for the Cougars defense.

Houston struggled defensively last season, placing 13th in passing defense and 10th in rushing defense in the Big 12. The Cougars finished the 2023 season with a 4-8 record before firing former Head Coach Dana Holgorsen after five seasons.

Willie Fritz was hired as head coach after a very successful run at Tulane. He was rewarded with back-to-back American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year awards, while ranking fifth in total victories from an active head coach with 208.

He brings in 31 years of coaching experience to a program that just competed in its first season in the Big 12 conference. Fritz has strung together eight career 10-win seasons.
