Oklahoma State alum Doug Gottlieb will begin his coaching career inside Gallagher-Iba Arena in 2024, it just won’t be drawn up the way he might’ve imagined.
Gottlieb was hired as the next head coach at Green Bay last month and despite retaining his responsibilities with FOX Sports Radio, he’s now leading the Phoenix into the 2024-25 season.
According to reports from Jon Rothstein and Jeff Goodman, Gottlieb will begin his tenure as a D-I coach when he takes the Phoenix to Stillwater on November 4 to face Steve Lutz and the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
The former Oklahoma State point guard was open about his desire to replace Mike Boynton this spring, throwing his hat in the ring as a candidate during an interview with WWLS, a sports radio broadcast in Oklahoma City.
“You know I want that job,” Gottlieb said. “[I understand] what we have, what we need, what needs to be fixed, how to get the culture back in line, how to bring back the alumni, how we need to connect better with Stillwater and with the students and all of Oklahoma. I fully believe I can fill up the gym and I can get the NIL.”
The Pokes opted to go with Lutz, however, and Gottlieb eventually landed with Green Bay instead. The main concern that kept him from being a serious candidate for Oklahoma State was his lack of coaching experience, but now he’ll have the chance to build a resume and potentially be a candidate should the job come open again in the near future.
