HCS Exclusive with Oklahoma Sooners National Wrestling Champion Cody Brewer

You may have heard by now about Oklahoma redshirt junior wrestler Cody Brewer winning the 2015 National Championship in the 133 lb weight class. He defeated Iowa’s Cory Clark by an 11-8 decision to take home his first title and Oklahoma’s 67th individual national championship. Brewer finished the season at 22-1, and in addition to his National Title, Brewer won the 2015 Big 12 Championship.

Other than a national champion, Cody enjoys other activities, such as watching movies and attending classes studying his major, sociology. He’s been wrestling since he was five, and wrestled throughout high school where he attended Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri. When asked why he chose to attend OU, Cody credited the coaches and the people at OU.

“The coaches and the people were really nice”, he said.

Brewer faced difficulties growing up with a single mother and two brothers. But, he has them and many others to thank. He says he would like to say thanks to everyone who has always supported him in his pursuit for his title and beyond.

Brewer didn’t achieve success overnight. He says it took a lot of practice and training. He would train 3-5 hours a day for five days a week.

As a career, he would like to pursue becoming a wrestling coach at a college and help others achieve what he has. His advice to young kids that want to become wrestlers is to “work hard and have fun cause that’s what the sport is about!”

One final question I asked him was what his favorite thing about the sport of wrestling. His answer was simple: “The competitiveness.”

It was a big weekend in Sooners sports, and Cody Brewer’s excellence on the mat played a big role in the success of it.
