Bob Huggins Arrested for DUI in Pittsburgh
West Virginia head basketball coach Bob Huggins has found himself in some legal trouble. According to Jeff Jenkins of MetroNews, Huggins was arrested Friday evening for a DUI in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Huggins was driving a black SUV at around 8:30 p.m. on Merchant Street off of Ridge Avenue when officers observed the vehicle in the middle of the road blocking traffic, according to Pittsburgh Police. The report added that the driver’s side door was open and the vehicle had a flat and shredded tire.
“Officers directed the male driver on how best to move off the road so they could help with the flat tire. When they observed him having difficulty maneuvering the SUV to allow vehicles to pass, they activated their lights to pull him over. Upon questioning, officers had strong suspicion to believe the male was intoxicated,” the police report said. “They asked him to exit the vehicle to perform standard field sobriety tests, which he failed. The male was placed in custody without incident and transported for further testing.”
Huggins’ BAC was .21, which is more than double the legal limit of .08 in Pennsylvania.
Huggins was charged with Driving Under the Influence and was released from custody. He will appear for a preliminary hearing at a later, undetermined date.
“We are gathering more information and will take appropriate action once the review is complete,” the school said in a statement.
Bob Huggins is one month removed from going on WLW Radio in Cincinnati and getting himself in hot water after using a homophobic slur not once, but twice, directing the slur at Xavier fans.
At the 1:15 mark of the audio clip, which was posted by Awful Announcing on Twitter, you can hear Huggins mention “all those f**s, those Catholic f**s,” when referencing Xavier fans who would “throw rubber penises on the floor, and then say they didn’t do it.”
Huggins’ remarks were in response to a question of if he’d “poached any Xavier guys to come play at West Virginia” to which he said, “Catholics don’t do that.”
Huggins has since agreed to a three-game suspension, a $1M reduction in salary, and will be required to take sensitivity training as part of his agreement to stay on as the men’s basketball coach.
