Big 12 Looking to Add One School to Get to 14: Report

NCAA Football: Texas Christian at Baylor

According to a report from ESPN’s Heather Dinich, the Big 12 is interested in adding just one more school to its membership, to eventually bring its long-term number to 14 programs after Oklahoma and Texas exit for the SEC.

Dinich reports that Big 12 athletic directors met with Commissioner Brett Yormark on Friday morning, just one day after Colorado became the league’s 13th member for the 2024 season and beyond.

In addition, Dinich also said that the conference is really looking for a school that wants to be a part of the Big 12 right now.

“Fourteen seems to be our best number,” a source told ESPN. “Now that we’re at 13, who’s going to be the first to make a move to start having a conversation with us was the general discussion today. We talked about a lot of different schools, but it’s more about, ‘Hey, we’ve got room for one more and who wants to be the first to really want to be a part of the Big 12 now and join us?'”

Until now, we’ve heard the remaining Pac-12 schools talk about their steadfastness and commitment to waiting on the numbers for a Pac-12 media rights deal, but it appears that there may be only room for one more on the Big 12 lifeboat. Does that change the narrative for schools like Arizona or Utah?

Who knows. But, it’s been reported that if a Pac-12 school doesn’t jump at the opportunity, UConn is waiting in the wings and would be a prime candidate to do so.

The Big 12 is adding one more school, that much is certain. Now, we will just have to wait and see who steps up and takes advantage of the opportunity.
