Matt Campbell Addresses Gambling Allegations Within Iowa State Football Program
The Iowa State football program finds itself in the middle of a gambling allegation around quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who was officially accused of tampering with records related to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation as Dekkers allegedly placed bets on the Iowa State Cyclones.
Reports state that a DraftKings account connected to Hunter Dekkers placed 366 bets worth more than $2,799.
Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell met the media for the first time since the news dropped and addressed the allegations, without really addressing the allegations, saying in part, “This is an ongoing NCAA & ongoing legal investigation. I am empathetic to all of you guys because all of you guys have a job to do and I get it… from that end, I apologize.”
Athletic Director Jamie Pollard put out a statement earlier in the week, saying, “Ever since becoming aware of potential NCAA eligibility issues related to sports wagering by several of our student-athletes in May, Iowa State University has been actively working to address these issues with the involved student-athletes. This process is ongoing and will take time before being completely resolved.”
Pollard continued by saying, “Iowa State cannot comment on any student athlete’s circumstance or eligibility status. We will however continue to support our student-athletes, as our compliance staff works with the NCAA to sort out questions surrounding their future eligibility for intercollegiate athletics competition.”
“Iowa State Athletics educates its student-athletes, coaches, and staff on NCAA rules and state of Iowa law surrounding sports wagering and will continue to emphasize the importance of understanding and adhering to these regulations moving forward.”
Dekkers started all of the Cyclones’ games last season and totaled 302 completions, 3,044 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
