Pac-12 Media Rights Proposal With Apple Expires ‘End of Week’: Report
Pac-12 presidents and athletic directors met earlier this week in hopes of finally reaching a media rights deal but were unable to do so, with the meeting ending Tuesday afternoon without a deal being reached.
Since then, meetings have been scheduled across several Pac-12 schools, with the Arizona Board of Regents (who advises both Arizona and Arizona State) and Washington Board of Regents both having meetings scheduled on Thursday.
The Big Ten also has held meetings in light of what’s happening out west, with the conference authorizing Commissioner Tony Petitti to explore expansion on Thursday morning and to bring them back more information on Oregon and Washington, as first reported by Pete Thamel.
With Colorado leaving last week, there really wasn’t any question why there is so much happening this week, but a report from Brett McMurphy might further complicate things.
According to McMurphy, the Pac-12’s current media rights proposal is set to expire at the end of the week.
He also reports that the proposal is said to be in the “low $20 million” figures, which puts it in the realm of $10M lower than what the Big 12 will be paid, and that’s without the “incentives” that the Pac-12 would have to deal with.
If it wasn’t bad enough that the Pac-12 had to try and convince its schools that a streaming deal is their best option, giving them just four days to do so is the icing on the cake.
This is a fumble of epic proportions if McMurphy’s report holds true, and could be the final straw in this slowly unraveling story.
