UTRGV Lists Former Texas Tech Coach Mark Adams as Head Coach
Despite there not being any press release, former Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams was mentioned as UTRGV’s head coach on Sunday in a strange update to the university’s website.
Adams stepped down at Texas Tech after being eliminated in the 2023 Big 12 Tournament after Adams was suspended for what Texas Tech called an “inappropriate, unacceptable, racially insensitive’ comment to a player.”
In what seems to be catching some online steam, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s official website leaked Adams’ potential position with the team. On the team’s updated coaching page, Adams is currently listed as the head basketball coach of the Vaqueros.
Texas Tech’s head coaching job was a bit of a whirlwind leading up to current head coach Grant McCasland. Mark Adams took over the Red Raiders after Chris Beard left the program to take over at Texas. Beard went on to lose that job after allegations of domestic violence were levied against him last January. Charges were eventually dropped, but Texas fired him and installed Rodney Terry as the interim head coach.
Adams put together a great start in Lubbock that included an appearance in the 2022 Big 12 Tournament final and a trip to the Sweet 16. Adams’ team went 27-10 that season. Then, in his second season in Lubbock, things on the court took a drastic turn. Texas Tech limped into the final weeks of the 2022-23 season with a 16-15 overall record and a 5-13 conference record. Adams’ off-the-court behavior, paired with an underwhelming basketball season, pushed players like Fardaws Aimaq and Jaylon Tyson into the transfer portal before his eventual downfall in Lubbock.
While details regarding the situation are still pretty hazy, UTRGV is either shopping for a new coach or having some wild technological issues.
