Chris Klieman Thought Offense Was ‘Too Complicated’ at Times in 2023
While Chris Klieman and the Kansas State Wildcats finished off the 2023 season with a 9-4 record and sixth place in the Big 12 Conference, in the eyes of the Wildcats head coach, sometimes the offense was doing a bit too much.
Klieman spoke for the first time ahead of spring football and stressed the importance of simplifying things in the receiver room to find success with each individual.
“We have got to be able to move our wide receivers around,” Klieman said. “We feel like we have enough bodies there and enough talented guys there. We have got to do two things: We have got to move guys around to get them in the best spot to be successful, and we have got to simplify some things in the wide receiver room.”
The idea of simplifying the offense is likely related to the departure of offensive coordinator Collin Klein, who accepted the OC job at Texas A&M as a member of Mike Elko’s staff. Klieman elected to promote offensive line coach Conor Riley to co-offensive coordinator alongside former Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells, who joined the Wildcats as a quarterbacks coach.
Klieman continued by saying, “That is something we have spent the most time on from an offensive standpoint this winter and early spring. Simplifying it, because we have some really talented guys that we probably made it too complicated, in my opinion, for them to get on the field. We are going to simplify it so we can get our best players out there.”
The Wildcats’ new “simplified” offense will take the field for the first time in 2024 on Saturday, August 31st, against the UT Martin Skyhawks.
