Big 12 Baseball Saturday Six-Pack: Texas Takes Down Kansas State While Oklahoma State Stays Hot
Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.
Best Game
Texas Tech at UCF
I decided to go with another low scoring game like I did on Friday. UCF had already taken the series on Friday and Texas Tech was just trying to avoid being swept. Things looked promising early for the Knights when Matt Prevesk went deep to go up 1-0.
Texas Tech would respond in the fourth inning as Drew Woodcox and Gavin Kash each hit a home run to put Texas Tech up.
Landon Stripling added an insurance run for Tech and while Andrew Estrella hit a home run in the ninth inning, the Red Raiders were able to hold on for a 3-2 victory. This was a much-needed bounce back win for Texas Tech despite dropping the series.
Best Win
Texas over #23 Kansas State
After getting blown out on Thursday, I thought Texas was done. Instead, they went out and scored 21 runs on Friday night to even up the series at one a piece. With the rubber match on Saturday, I didn’t know what to expect. Well, Texas came out swinging because they scored four runs in the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead.
Kansas State would fight back in the eighth inning but once again Texas was able to separate themselves late. Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell went yard to provide a couple of insurance runs.
This was a huge series, and it looks like Texas is right back in the Big 12 title race after struggling the last two weeks.
Worst Loss
#25 Oklahoma
The Sooners came into Saturday trying to avoid the sweep after losing their first two games against Lamar. Well, two losses turned into three quickly as Lamar jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Oklahoma gave up over 30 runs this weekend and I don’t care how good you are at the plate, that is going to be tough to overcome. The only good thing is that this wasn’t a conference series and maybe they needed to hit this low spot to bounce back in the right direction.
Saturday MVP
Oklahoma State 1B Colin Brueggemann
Colin had a big day for the Cowboys as he did all his damage in extra innings. He hit a solo shot in the eleventh and in the same inning drove in a pair of runs. Not a bad day at all.
Pitcher of the Day
Baylor RHP Collin McKinney
Colling pitched an absolute gem on Saturday as he went a little over six innings and managed to strike out ten batters.
Best Home Run
Oklahoma State 3B Tyler Wulfert
Tyler’s home run in the eleventh inning gave the Cowboys the lead and started a long scoring rally for Oklahoma State.
