Despite some significant cracks in the ACC’s foundation, league commissioner Jim Phillips does not agree with the outside noise.
On Monday at ACC Media Days, Phillips made a bold claim about the ACC, referring to it as a top three conference in America.
Upon taking the stage at ACC Media Days, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips mentioned that the league is “one of the top three conferences” in generating revenue and that they “fully expect that will remain in the years to come.”
His comments are eerily similar to those of Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, who mentioned at Big 12 Media Days that the league is solidified in third and headed toward the top.
While Phillips may be bullish about the future of the league, the same could be said for former Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff, who rejected the outside noise so much that he ran the league off of the face of the map.
In the case of the ACC, however, legal disputes and lawsuits have been brought against the ACC on behalf of two of their most prestigious members, Florida State and Clemson, who both appear to be looking for an exit in conference realignment.
While things would likely take a while to fall apart, in the case of Phillips’ comments vs. Yormark’s, the general college football audience is starting to lean towards the Big 12 Conference, a league nicknamed “America’s Conference” by several notable sports personalities.
