Kansas Women’s Basketball 2023-24 Basketball Schedule Analysis
The 2023-24 Kansas Jayhawks women’s basketball schedule is complete and here is an analysis of the entire schedule as basketball season nears.
Season Opener
Kansas will open the season at home against Northwestern State on Nov. 8. But, after that, the Jayhawks will be away from Allen Fieldhouse for a couple of weeks, thanks to true road games and tournaments. Speaking of …
Fun in the Sun
The Jayhawks will be at the Cayman Islands Classic in George Town, Cayman Islands on Nov. 24-25. The opponents are already set. Kansas will play Virginia Tech in its first game and then UConn in its second game. The Jayhawks will definitely get tested in this event.
Best Non-Con Game
I mean, obviously UConn, right? But let’s not overlook the Virginia Tech game. The Hokies made a deep run in last year’s NCAA Tournament and won 31 games. Between the Hokies and the Huskies, the Jayhawks might leave the Caymans without a win, but knowing exactly how much progress they need to make as a team.
Mid-Major Danger Game
Watch the Southeastern Louisiana game on Nov. 30. The Lady Lions shared the Southland Conference regular-season crown a season ago and won 21 games. They were solid away from home, going 8-9.
Big 12 Opener
Kansas will host West Virginia on Dec. 30 to open Big 12 play. It will be a rematch of sorts, as Kansas coach Brandon Schneider and WVU coach Mark Kellogg faced off as coaches in a Division II national championship game. Both also coached at Stephen F. Austin, with Kellogg succeeding Schneider.
Big 12 Road Opener
Kansas heads to Iowa State on Jan. 3 before taking a trip to Texas Tech on Jan. 6, as the Jayhawks get a head start on their road slate.
Brutal Big 12 Stretch
Kansas will get some early tests right in a row to wrap up January, as they’ll go to Texas then Kansas State, host Iowa State and then travel to Oklahoma. Texas and Oklahoma shared the Big 12 regular season title last year.
What Should Happen?
Super-seniors Holly Kersgieter, Zakiyah Franklin and Taiyanna Jackson didn’t come back to miss the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year. But the Jayhawks have put together a daunting non-conference schedule, so their margin for error in league play will be less than in past years. Kansas was basically the first team out of last year’s tournament. They’re good enough to reach the NCAAs this year. But they’re looking for more than just reaching the tournament.
