Texas Longhorns Men’s Basketball 2023-24 Roster Preview
The Texas Longhorns are preparing for the 2023-24 men’s basketball roster and below is a preview of every player on the roster entering November’s opening game.
Below are the returning players, the transfers and the freshmen that will play a role in Texas’ upcoming season.
Expected to Return
Dillon Mitchell
The 6-foot-8 sophomore forward is back after flirting with the NBA last summer. While he has incredible athletic ability, something that caught the eye of NBA scouts, he needs to refine his game and another year at Texas should allow him to do that and improve his potential draft position. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and he came on late in the season.
Alex Anamekwe
The 6-foot-5 sophomore forward played in just 12 games and hopes to carve out a larger role this season.
Cole Bott
The 6-foot-6 redshirt sophomore forward played in nine games last season for Texas. He’ll be fighting for playing time with several other players.
Preston Clark
The 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman forward did not play last season.
Dylan Disu
The 6-foot-9 senior forward decided to use his COVID waiver and return to play for the Longhorns for one more season. This could be the year he emerges as the No. 1 scoring option in the frontcourt. He became a star for Texas during the Elite Eight run and finished with 8.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
Tyrese Hunter
The 6-foot junior averaged 10.3 points for Texas in his first year on the 40 Acres, after spending his freshman season with Iowa State. He did go through the NBA Draft process in the spring, but there was little question he was coming back. With the departure of Marcus Carr, he is the top returning guard for the Longhorns. Where he needs improvement is from the 3-point line.
Gavin Perryman
The 6-foot-1 redshirt sophomore guard played in 11 games last season. He’ll have a hard time cracking the rotation between the returning talent and the transfers.
Brock Cunningham
You’re not getting rid of the 6-foot-6 mainstay that easily. But it IS his last season of college basketball. Entering his sixth season he averaged just 4.6 points and 3.4 rebounds last season. But he’s the ultimate glue guy or the ultimate pest, depending on what jersey you’re wearing.
Arrivals Via Transfer
Max Abmas
The 6-foot senior guard was one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal. The former Oral Roberts star might have been the top transfer guard in the country and comes to Texas as the NCAA Division I active career scoring leader (2,562 points). He should start right away and give Texas a boost on offense.
Chendall Weaver
The 6-foot-3 guard transferred from UT Arlington after he was named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2022-23. He averaged 9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists in a team-best 29.5 in minutes per contest. He might not start right away, but he’ll be a factor for the Longhorns. Come 2024-25, when the Longhorns are in the SEC, he could be their top perimeter scoring option.
Kadin Shedrick
The 6-foot-11 forward and graduate student transferred in from Virginia. He was a three-year player for the Cavaliers, and last season he averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds last season. He’ll probably push the rest of the frontcourt for the playing time that isn’t taken by Disu.
Ithiel Horton
A late transfer from UCF — a new Big 12 rival — he also went through the NBA Draft process, got his report card and returned to college basketball for another season. The 6-foot-5 guard is a graduate student and averaged 12.3 points last season. He has been playing college basketball since 2018.
Ze’Rik Onyema
The 6-foot-8 junior forward transferred in from UT-El Paso — the former home of head coach Rodney Terry — and gives Texas depth. He averaged 4.7 points and 3.0 rebounds for the Miners the past three seasons.
Class of 2023 Signees
Chris Johnson
The 6-foot-5 guard signed with the Longhorns out of Montverde Academy in Florida, but he’s a native of Missouri City, Texas, so he’s coming home. The four-star recruit was the No. 78 player in the country according to 247Sports.com.
Devon Pryor
The 6-foot-7 forward played his prep ball at PSAT-XEA Academy and is from Houston. The three-star player landed just outside the Top 200 players in the country in 247Sports.com’s final rankings.
Jackson Prince
The 5-foot-10 guard from Duncanville, Texas, signed with Texas in the summer.
