Oklahoma First Team to Miss NCAA Tournament

Oklahoma men's basketball coach Porter Moser.

With several late bid stealers finding their way into the 2024 NCAA Tournament field, Porter Moser and the Oklahoma Sooners slipped through the cracks as the first team out.

Oklahoma narrowly missed out on earning an invite to the Big Dance but was passed over for Boise State, Colorado, Virginia, and Colorado State, which were the last four teams to make the field.

The Sooners finished off the 2023-24 season in ninth place in the Big 12 Conference with an overall record of 20-12 and a conference record of 8-10. The Sooners had been comfortably in the tournament field leading into the final week of bracketology, but with multiple unexpected auto bids finding their way into the tournament field, the Sooners’ post-season path appears to be in the NIT.

While the Sooners’ NCAA Tournament hopes fell short in the hands of the NCAA Tournament Committee, Oklahoma had several opportunities to improve its resume. According to a report from KJRH-TV’s Cayden McFarland, Oklahoma played 11 teams that made the NCAA Tournament since January 7th and finished with just a 1-10 record in those games.

Despite Oklahoma’s unfortunate undoing down the stretch, the Sooners could elect to continue to take the court this season as a key member of the NIT Tournament. The NIT Selection Show begins on Sunday, March 17th, at 8:30 PM CT on ESPN2.
