Houston Cougars Receive No. 1 Seed in 2024 NCAA Tournament

NCAA Basketball: Houston at Baylor

The 2024 NCAA Tournament selection committee has given the Houston Cougars the No. 1 seed in the South Regional.

Houston will take on No. 16 Longwood on Friday in Memphis. Longwood is in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022. The winner will play either No. 8 seed Nebraska or No. 9 seed Texas A&M.

The Cougars are fresh off a run to the Big 12 Tournament Title Game, where they ended up losing to Iowa State. Houston earned the top seed in the bracket after an impressive body of work, which included a Big 12 regular season title.

Houston finished the regular season with a 30-3 record, including a 15-3 record in Big 12 play.

Houston earned a No. 1 seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the Sweet 16, where they were defeated 89-75 by No. 5 Miami.

The Cougars are led by Jamal Shead, who averaged 13.2 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game this season. He was named the Big 12 Player of the Year last week and has also been named a semifinalist for the Bob Cousy Award.

Houston has made 24 NCAA Tournament appearances while reaching six Final Fours, plus two National Championship runner-ups (1983, 1984). The Cougars have an overall record of 38-29 in March Madness.
