The answer to the question everyone is asking about West Virginia’s special teams is the one no one wants to hear.
Junior Jordan Thompson’s struggles with punt returns continued Saturday against Kansas with a second lost fumble and a seemingly impossible minus-2 yards on five returns. For the season, Thompson has returned 11 of the opposition’s 38 punts for a total of 50 yards. That includes a 30-yard return that alone was 12 yards better than the team’s total punt return yardage all of last season.
WVU averages 4.07 yards per punt return, which ranks No. 111 out of 125 teams nationally. Texas Tech is No. 10 in punt return defense and has allowed just 18 yards total on seven returns.
