There are many ways to illustrate the many edges West Virginia held over Towson Saturday night, and it’s shortsighted to pick just one after the Mountaineers pummeled their Football Championship Subdivision opponent before 56,414 at Mountaineer Field.
But this one went along way toward explaining the 54-0 final.
When Clint Trickett threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Thompson in the third quarter, the Mountaineers had 80 yards of offense just in the six times it made it into the Towson red zone.
The Tigers had 68 yards of offense. Period.
The score was 38-0.
WVU secured its first shutout since 2010 and Trickett passed for 348 yards — his third straight game with at least as many yards — and two touchdowns as the Mountaineers (1-1) responded to losing their first opener in 11 years by winning their 11th straight home opener.
“I challenged our guys all week to see what kind of team we were and to come out with a bunch of enthusiasm and effort and be excited about playing a game, and I felt like we were,” WVU coach Dana Holgorsen said.
