UCF Targeting Joe Girardi As Next Head Baseball Coach: Report
Former Yankees and Phillies manager Joe Girardi could be headed back to the dugout, but this time it would be at the college level, should he take the job.
According to UCFsports.com, UCF is targeting Girardi as its new head baseball coach and has offered the former MLB GM the job.
As one of the most recognizable names in baseball, Girardi’s addition to the Knights’ program would obviously be a major move for UCF.
As a player and a manager, Girardi was a four-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees, with three rings as a player (1996, 1998, 1999) and once as their manager (2009).
After falling one game short of making the 2017 World Series, the Yankees decided to part ways with Girardi, who spent the next two years as an analyst with the MLB Network.
Then, in 2020, the Philadelphia Phillies hired Girardi as its manager for just over two years before parting ways in June of 2022.
Though he’s never coached below the Major League level, UCFsports.com says that he was “intrigued” by the idea of coaching college baseball and had his eye on the UCF job.
In his career as a manager, Girardi has accumulated a 1,120–935 record and has all the experience a program like UCF could ever want as they head into the Big 12.
